Description: Greenland Gap Preservation and waterfall on Patterson Creek: popular with locals for swimming and playing in the 15-20 foot high chute / falls that empty into a 10 foot deep pool at the bottom. The falls are located downstream outside of the preservation.

The Greenland Gap Preservation is located in the Grant County community of Greenland. The Gap's primary feature of the 250 acre preserve is the well developed, symmetrical water gap formed by the North Fork of Patterson Creek. The entire Gap is ringed by Oriskany Sandstone cliffs, which rise 800 feet above the cool, clear waters of the creek.

Two trails, one on each side of the Gap, take visitors to the top of the cliffs for dramatic views. Both trails begin near the car pull-off and main entrance sign on the east side of the Gap. The trails are very steep and rocky and are difficult unless you are in good physical condition. Do not attempt to hike these trails without water, hiking shoes, kicking stick, and well conditioned legs and heart. While October with its fall foliage is the most dramatic and colorful time to visit, every season is beautiful at Greenland Gap.

Directions from Mt. Storm, WV:**From Mt. Storm, WV where Rt. 42 intersects U.S. Rt. 50 - proceed about 4 miles on 42 South past the BP Gas station and Rt. 93 turn (do not turn). Continue on Rt. 42 South down the mountain about 8.5 more miles until you intersect Rt. 93 (Scherr). Make a left onto Rt. 93 and go a few hundred feet and turn right onto Country Road CR-1 (Scherr Rd, to Greenland Gap labeled). The falls are 3.2 miles from this turn -- to get there, keep left across the bridge -- when you get to the Y in the road, keep right -- you should be following the creek - stream valley the entire way - after a total of 3.2 miles on CR-1, you'll see a parking area on the right side of the road that accommodates several cars with a cliff in front of it -- park here and walk downstream a couple of hundred feet to the falls.

Directions from Abram's Creek: Exit the gravel road of Abram's Creek Retreat and turn right onto U.S. Rt. 50 West. Go 3.2 miles to where Rt. 50 intersects Rt. 42 and continue with directions above.**

Cautions: The chute / waterfall is slippery and significant speeds would be reached if one attempted to slide down the chute into the waters below. This is not advised as rocks can render one unconscious and the waters below are deep.
