Course Description: Two full days of wood bow making and arrow making fun
Students make their first bow and arrow sets in about 30 min. Their second bow will take less than two hours to make. Arrow making will be covered and the student will get material for six arrows. The third bow is hickory of which the students carve from dried stave and can be completed by class end. Natural bow finishes will be discussed and provided for your class projects. Sting making choices and techniques will be explored and experienced.
Class size is limited to ensure good teacher/student interaction.
Materials provided would be the raw materials for:

bows
six arrows
strings
a scraping tool
and bow finish
All materials are included in the cost of the course. My intent is to
provide each student with a draw bench to use for the carving work of which can
be purchased after the class if desired.
Dates: August 18 and 19 of 2007
Time: August 18 Check in 8-9 AM. Class Starts at 9 AM and will go till about 7 PM with breaks for meals
August 19 Start at 8 AM till about 5 PM
Cost: $250 per student Covers Instruction and project supplies
Deposit: of $50 holds your class spot. Refundable up to 3 days before the class for cancellations
Location:Where to meet to be announced (most likley the Community bon-fire area).
What to bring 1> Positive Learning Attitude
2> Food: I can teach bow making or cook not both. Bring your own or visit the Rt. 50 cafe 1.2 miles east on Rt. 50 for breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner.
3> Leather/protective gloves
4> Notebook and pen/pencils
5> Wood working tools if you can get them including Rasps, Straight spoke shave, draw knife, sand papers and a small knife that you can do detail carving with ideally one you use regularly.
6> You will be required to sign a liability release to participate in the class because of the Litigious times of which we live.
Teacher Bio:
Cal Reed has enjoyed a diverse life of mechanical engineering studies. Chemical Operations, Research and Development work with one process patent pending. His passions of primitive living skills have lead him to study under Tom Brown JR’s at his Tracking, Nature and Wilderness Survival School and he continues to hone his living with the earth skills in rural West Virginia’s Jackson County. Cal has been teaching Bow making classes at the Medicine Woods Nature center in Ohio over the last 5 years. Cal has polished and proven his techniques and equipment in the field by harvesting deer with the tools he teaches. He is also a Nationally Certified Massage Therapist with teaching experience in Massage therapy in bodywork modalities and Pathology.
Currently his day job is being an Instrumentation Specialist in an industrial wastewater plant doing what he can to protect and heal our Earth Mother. Taking one of his classes is a unique experience being shown DOABLE steps to walk closer to the earth and exploring inner balance in this fast fabricated society in which we find ourselves.
